![]() | The cricket fraternity in Pakistan is gripped by a deep sense of shock and dismay following the five-year ban slapped on Shoaib Akhtar. Outspoken as he is, former quickie Sarfraz Nawaz has once again hit out at the Pakistan Cricket Board. “This is too harsh a sentence. The new government must dissolve the existing board (PCB) and form another committee,” Nawaz said. “It is common knowledge that Shoaib wasn’t in the good books of PCB’s Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Nagmi. They have used this opportunity to finish him.” He asks why Danish Kaneria has been allowed to go scot-free. Writing for a website, Kaneria expressed his disappointment at being demoted from category B to C in the central contracts. Nawaz said, “Danish too has been critical of the board’s policies but has been let off with a warning. Then why such a harsh sentence has been meted out to Akhtar who was speaking his mind?” He feels that without Akhtar Pakistan cricket will take a downward plunge. “We have lost our only match-winner. Where are the bowlers? We struggled against India because Shoaib wasn’t fit. Even Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul haven’t been in good shape.” Nawaz believes that Akhtar should go court and get a stay order on the ban. “This seems to be his only recourse at the moment. Maybe then he can hope for government intervention.” |
