![]() | Chief hockey coach Joaquim Carvalho believes that intensive training sessions and practice matches will help the Indian think-tank to find the best possible combination for the Olympic qualifiers beginning in Santiago, Chile, on March 1. "Matches against the Western Australian side will provide us with competition, which is vital at this stage. We aim to achieve a better understanding among the players. We need to be at our best but without laying bare all our ideas,'' Carvalho said on Friday ahead of the team's departure for Perth. The 24-member squad together with an eight-member support staff will leave for Perth on Friday night for a training-cum-competition stint to prepare for the qualifiers. India will play six matches beginning with the tie against Western Australian Institute of Sports on February 3. It will be followed by three matches against AHLM, an Australian club side, on February 6, 9 and 12. India's other two matches are against the Chinese national squad on February 7 and 11 before the team returns home on February 15. |

![]() | After training (and socialising) your socks off, Australia is an excellent country to travel around and the East Coast is a great place to start. Brisbane is sandwiched in between the Gold Coast to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the north, surrounding the city with some of the country’s best beaches, not to mention the fabulous man-made beach in the middle of Brisbane! The size of the country can be a little daunting but transport for travellers in Australia is excellent so if you decide you just can’t bear to leave anything out (north, south, centre, east, west), there’s no reason why you can’t do it all. The friends you’ve made during the hockey programme will undoubtedly want to travel as well so grab your cork hat, your boomerang and your thongs (all will be explained) and head off around one of the most travel-friendly countries in the world. Whether it’s cities or surf you’re after, playing sport abroad somewhere as exciting and diverse as Australia is a fantastic opportunity for any enthusiastic hockey player, and one not to be missed! |
